Ecuador fishermen caught between cartel threats, U.S. strikes

Ecuador — At first light on Ecuador’s Pacific coast, small fishing boats fan out from the villages of San Mateo and Jaranjo, their hows pointed toward deeper waters and the promise of a good catch. Other boats come in from the rolling surf to battered crews, where crews unload baskets of tuna and swordfish and traders rush to inspect the day’s load.

The scene belies the dangers some fishermen face pushing out into these waters.

Onshore, drug cartels have turned the small ports of Ecuador’s Manalo province into a cocaine-trafficking hole, entering local fishermen who are prizes for their navigation skills. The cartels present an impossible choice, each more than a year’s legal income smuggling drugs, or face selection, threats and violence.

Offshore, the violence comes without warning — from U.S. air strikes on alleged “narcot-terrorists.” The U.S. military has destroyed 67 vessels and killed more than 220 people since last September, as part of Operation Southern Spear.

The U.S. government has claimed responsibility for those attacks and deaths. Two others k haunt claimed — but that bear all the hallmarks of U.S. strikes — involved fishing vessels from Manalo province, according to Reuters interviews with these survivors from

one attack and a dozen survivor accounts gathered by the Permanent Committee on Human Rights, a local advocacy group.

The Washington Post reported this past week that the boats were struck as part of a recent CIA program.

Fisherman Simon Villacreses was among the 85-person crew of the Negra Francisca Duarte II that launched from Manta, the largest town in the province.

At sea on March 17, they heard the buzz of a drone overhead just before a strike hit near the galley, setting the boat ablaze.

Some crew dove into the Pacific while others jumped into two smaller motorized boats, according to Villacreses and two other survivors.

The crew headed for what they thought was a nearby tuna vessel. Instead, the man said, they were met by armed English-speaking men in military-style uniforms.

“They started pointing guns at us. They took us aboard, put hoods over our heads and tied our hands behind our backs,” said Villacreses, 52, who suffered a head injury in the attack.

The crew was then transferred at extra to Ecuadorian Navy vessel, which took them to El Salvador, offroad medical treatment, and flew crew members back home on commercial flights, according to the survivors and the rights group.

A similar sequence of events played out nine days later with another drone attack on a boat called the Don Maco, from the same region.

A boat eight fishermen from a third vessel, the Fiorello, have been missing since January. Two Fiorello crew members who were on a separate, smaller boat told the Permanent Committee they saw smoke coming from the main boat’s last known location.

BEDMINSTER, NJ — Two years after Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump staged a New Jersey news conference flanked by grocery staples to spotlight inflation under Democrats, food prices are still rising despite his pledge to bring them down. The gap between promise and reality now looms as a vulnerability for Republicans ahead of November’s mid-term elections.

Standing between tables piled high with fruit, beef, cereal, milk and other household staples at his Bedminster golf club on Aug. 15, 2024, Trump blamed the Biden administration for sharp increases in grocery prices. The spectacle, complete with charts showing higher prices, was aimed at undercutting the Democratic nominee, Kamala Harris, and highlighted Trump’s central promise. He alone could tame inflation and lower the cost of living.

Two years on, higher gasoline and grocery prices are squeezing household budgets and turning the cost of living into the top issue for American voters. Voters now give Democrats a slight edge over Republicans in who they view as better stewards of the economy for the first time in nearly a decade, according to Reuters/Ipsos polling.

Sheila Carney, a 68-year-old Trump voter, punctuated her frustration with an euphrive as she unloaded $70 worth of groceries into her car outside a supermarket car. So from Trump’s Bedminster club. The haul was modest: some meat, detergent and a 12-pack of iced tea.

For Carney, the receipt was evidence that the affordability concerns Trump has sometimes dismissed as a Democratic “loose” remain a daily burden for many Americans.

DUBAI — Iran called on the United States to accept defeat on Aug. 15, while President Donald Trump blasted Tehran as “very evil” and told Americans to prepare for continued high fuel prices as a result of the war.

Progress toward peace talks and oil tanker traffic through the strategic Strait of Hormuz remained halted, with no sign the warring parties were moving toward ending the conflict that the Unit-

ed States and Israel launched on Feb. 28.

“This strait will be opened and closed only under Iran’s command, and so long as you do not accept the reality of defeat and stop indulging in fantasies, Iran will continue to enforce the blockade.” Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi posted on X.

Foreign Minister Abbas Ataspih said Iran had not decided to resume talks with the United States. He told Iranian news outlet Shahraza News in an interview published on Aug. 15 that Washington must meet conditions on the strait in order for shipping to resume in the waterway that handled one-fifth of the world’s oil before the war.

Trump urged Americans to accept

slightly higher gasoline prices while the conflict continues.

He told a publicist rally in Garden City, New York, on Aug. 14 that paying “a tiny little bit more for your gasoline” is worth the cost of ensuring “a very evil country” could not have a nuclear weapon, one of his stated rationales for the war.

“After we finish defeating Iran...perity soon I’ll be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States,” Trump said.

Throughout the conflict, the president has alternated between threats of escalation and assertions that a peace deal is imminent.

In a fraud that has sparked inflation and disappointed voters, the average U.S. price of a gallon of gasoline was

about $4.08 on Aug. 14, up 29% from a year earlier, according to AAA.

Trump, a Republican, campaigned for reelection on a promise to lower energy costs, and Democrats are seeking to make the war’s debut on order at November congressional elections.

Benchmark Brent Greene were on track for a weekly rise of 6% and West Texas intermediate 3.4%.

Tehran, too, has stopped up its rhetoric in recent days as attempts to bring a permanent end to the war appear deadlocked.

In South Korea, some saver last season of legal dog meat

SEONDAWAK, South Korea — Fur decades, the three days of summer considered the hottest of the year were among the busiest for South Korea's dog meat restaurants, as diners sought traditional stamina-boosting foods to reduce the heat.

The third 'hoksuk' or hot day, of 2026 on Aug. is carried an allied sense of finality. It was the last before a nationwide ban on the breeding slaughter and sale of dogs for meat takes full of fact in February 2025.

In the Moran Market in Seongnam, once the country's best-known hubs for dog meat, has littleer crowds filled all leysays lined with restaurants.

Yet many businesses have shifted to black goat stew and other alternatives, while the few customers still ordering 'boontrang,' or dog meat stew, were overwhelmingly elderly.

'It's really desirable now,' said Kim Yong-Seok, head of the Moran Market Merchants Association, who has worked in the area, which is near Seoul, for more than 40 years. What was once a bustling trade hub has become 'a town of old people,' he said.

The ban says a long decline in dog meat consumption as rising get ownership and changing attitudes toward animal welfare transform public opinion. In a survey released just before the law passed in 2024, more than 90% of 2,500 respondents said they had no intention of eating dog meat in the future, while more than 80% responded a ban. Nearly 91% said they had not eaten dog meat during the previous year.

Government data showed more than 5,000 businesses were affected by the legislation, while officials said most dog farms had already closed almost of next year's deadline.

control former President Yoon Suk Yoo and his wife, former first lady Kim Soon Hee, an outspoken animal welfare advocate who publicly backed a ban.

Parliament passed legislation in January 2024 banning the breeding slaughter, distribution and sale of dogs for human consumption.

The law provided a three-year grace period and will be fully enforced from February, with violation facing prison terms and fines. Authorities have also promised support for affected farmers, distributors and restaurant owners.

For restaurant owner Lee Kang-chun, a former merchants' association chairman who has spent 37 years in the trade, the change evokes mixed emotions.

Lee said he believed it was right to end dog meat consumption considering South Korea's global image and shifting social attitudes. Yet he struggled to hide his sadness when discussing customers, many in their 70s, 80s and 90s, who

taxed long distances for a meal that they believe receives strength.

'When I see elderly people come all this way and leave because there's no dog meat left, it nearly brings me to tears,' he said. The market is one of the last places near Seoul still serving dog meat.

Despite soaring supply costs and minimal profits, he continues serving the debt largely for local regulars.

Among those buring dog meat stew Aug. 16 was You-Sin-seok, who said he had eaten the debt since his early 20s.

'I'm very disappointed,' You said. 'People keep looking for a because they believe it's good for their health, and now they're getting rid of it.'

You, 60, said he accepted the government's decision, but would miss dog meat.

Another customer, Kim Jin-suk, 71, said he had few regrets about dog meat going off the moon. 'I'm stupid not something else.'

Hiroshi Okuda, 93, former chairman of Toyota Motor Corp., died Aug. 8. As Toyota president from 1995, Okuda battled a period of poor experts and strong yen by building production buses almost in a strategy that saw sales surge, while internally championing the development of the revolutionary gas-electric Pima car Okuda was born in 1912 in the central prefecture of Mie to a wealthy family that owned a regional installation. He joined Toyota's act providing impact on the 1970s and, within three years, was overseeing expenses including for executive entertainment. He became Toyota's first leader outside the Toyota family in nearly three decades, assuming the presidency at a time when obtaining domestic market share added to the headaches of declining Japanese reports and a strong currency.

Martha Ingram, 90, a longtime business leader and philanthropist of Ingram's business, died Aug. 8 in Nashville. Ingram became chair of the Nashville-based business, a river barge transportation and back publishing company, when he husband, business magnate and philanthropist E. Bronson Ingram, died in 1995. Jackie, 16, a beloved bald eagle, died Aug. 10 while rehabilitating at a wildlife center in California after being rescued following an apparent 'alteration' with two subadult eagles. The Oak Raptor Center said that Jackie's remains had been transferred into the case of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. For nearly a decade, millions of people around the world watched mama Jackie through the Friends of Big Bear Valley for: stream concerns battlesigma-storms, raise eagles and help turn a remote rural overlooking Big Bear Lake into one of California's most beloved wildlife attractions. After Jackie was seen in an 'alteration' on July 17, 'intact bloodwork' had indicated Jackie was 'experiencing severe anemia and inflammation affecting the kidneys,' the center said on July 22. Ben Jones, 84, an actor and Georgia politician, died Aug. 9. Jones played a small handful of roles, but is best known

as mechanic Coster Davenport in 'The Dukes of Hazzard' 70, was from 1979 to 1985, and he appeared in nearly every episode as well as the 1997 reunion and two 'Dukes of Hazzard' video games. Jones relocated to Georgia during the filming of 'The Dukes of Hazzard' and, during his time on a resident, served as a Democratic representative in the U.S. House from 1999 through 1993. He was a cosponsor on nearly 160 bills and House resolutions signed into law, including the Central Culture Act and Federal Protection Act of 1991 and the 1994 Atlanta Centennial Olympic Games Committee, rather Can Act.

Ben Nelson, 86, an NBA legend who won five titles with the Boston Celtics, died Aug. 9. Nelson became an innovative coach after retiring from playing and sits with the second most coaching wins in NBA history. In 1978, his number 10 years was hoisted into the entire series of 2.3 Cubs and 1.6B the number is tired. The profile scores went on to win NBA Coach of the Year Three times and served as the skipper of the Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks.

mier, died on Aug. 12. Zha graduated from Beijing's elite-Tanghua University, joining the Communist Party in 1949, the same year then Zedong declared the People's Republic of China. Sent to the countryside during the chaos of the Cultural Revolution, he gradually worked his way up through the ranks after being politically rehabilitated, and was appointed Shanghai mayor in 1967, overseeing its first steps into becoming the global financial hub it is today. Storing to Beijing in 1968 it went for the central government. In helped push the reforms that transformed China from a beleaguered holdout against the collapse of Soviet-style communism in the early 1990's to an emerging superpower with economic growth rates owned by other governments. At least 5 dead in Indiana after storms and floods, officials say

Powerful storms and floods have killed at least six people in Indiana, including a 4-year-old boy, state officials said on Aug. 25.

In addition to the boy, three women and two men have died since the storm system started on Aug. 31, the Indiana State Emergency Operations Center said.

Two deaths took place in Delaware County and one each in Jennings County, Lake County, Porter County and LaPorte County, the center said.

Indiana Gov. Mike Braun said President Donald Trump told him on Aug. 25 that the state's request for a presidential emergency declaration would be approved, paving the way for federal aid.

At one point on Aug. 31, the storms moving through Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky left steady, midline utility customers without power.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said on Aug. 31 one person had died after flooding prevented first imposition from reaching the individual in Roseville.

Demo confirms South Carolina as first state for 2028 primaries

WASHINGTON — The Democratic National Committee on Aug. 31 officially selected South Carolina as the first state to vote in the party's 2028 primaries.

The vote at the DNC's summer meeting in Austin codified a July vote by the organizations Rules & Kylaws Committee. Following South Carolina will be Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Michigan and Virginia, the DNC said in a news release.

The first state to vote in a presidential nominating contest often helps to shape the field of candidates, drawing campaign spending and media attention. The calendar adapted on Aug. 25 will allow Democrats "to battle best candidates while maintaining an open, affordable field," the committee said.

Some Democrats often mentioned as potential presidential contenders have visited South Carolina over the past several months, including Kentucky Gov. Andy Redman, U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona, and California Gov. Susan Newman.

South Carolina and Nevada had trusted in July over which state should claim the top spot in a competition that became a proxy battle between the party's Black and Latino bases.

Morocco arrests 115 migrants headed for Spain's Ceuta enclave

CEUTA, Spain — Moroccan police arrested at least 20 people on Aug. 15 as they tried to enter Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta, a mob tightened security on both sides of the border after social media posts called for another mass-engaged crossing.

The attempted crossing came two weeks after more than 72,000 migrants snuged into Ceuta, sparking tensions within the European Union and finding anti-immigration rhetoric among far eight parties worldwide. At least 99 people died in the attempt to reach European soil.

A source in Morocco's Interim Ministry told Reuters those detained included 499 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa and two Moroccan citizens arrested in or around Fading, the Moroccan city opposite Ceuta.

According to Spanish news agency EFE, Moroccan police used tear gas to disperse groups of migrants gathered on hills about 2 miles from the border. Reuters later saw hundreds of police officers, some in riot gear and others in plane clothes, returning from the hills outside of the region.

In Ceuta, Spanish soldiers guarded superheater while police heavily patrolled the enclave's main streets. The city was calmer than in the days after the mass crossing attempt on July 30.

Hopes fade in Colombia

More bodies recovered days after major quake

BOGOTA, Colombia — Hopes of finding survivors of the earthquake that struck western Colombia days ago were dwindling on Aug. 25, as more bodies were pulled from buildings that collapsed due to the magnitude 7.4 quake that left hundreds dead or missing.

The earthquake struck just after 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 10 in San Jose del Palmar, bypping apartment buildings and damaging schools, churches, hospitals and homes from the Pacific port of Buenaventura to Colombia's coffee-growing region and major western cities.

At least 294 people have died with 320 more missing and nearly 4,000 more injured Colombia's disaster management unit estimated on Aug. 25. Over two-thirds of the deaths were concentrated in the cities of Cali and Pereira.

"We have only one site where there are signs of life," told the Captain Alberto Hernandez told Reuters. "At the other locations we are unfortunately in the phase of recovering bodies."

With over 2 million inhabitants, Cali in Colombia's third-largest city, Rescue workers continued through the morning to sell through mountains of shattered country, bricks and metal to find those who remain unaccounted for, while others were cleaning their neighborhoods aimed with become and shovels.

Hernandez said they would likely finish recovering bodies by Aug. 30, after which they will begin using heavy equipment to clear the debris.

In the city of Pereira, deep in Colombia's coffee-growing region, hundreds of people spent the night on mate or in texts at a makeshift shelter in a park, where coordinators said there was a lack of blankets, texts, hygiene products and food.

A report by the disaster management unit found that thousands of homes were destroyed by the Aug. 10 quake, leaving hundreds sleeping outdoors in shelters and waiting to find out whether damaged apartments are at risk of collapsing.

Colombia has recorded 269 aftershocks since the quake, piling on dangers for rescue workers and volunteers still sifting through the unstable rubble.

The disaster became the first major challenge for President Abelardo De La Espinilla, a political newcomer who took office a week ago and will now oversee relief efforts and reconstruction in the wake of one of Colombia's

worst natural disasters.

De La Espinilla has faced some criticism over his handling of the initial hours, particularly for not accepting officers of rescue teams from certain countries. Authorities later received some response teams from Israel and the United States.

The deaths of people who had become national symbols further discredited hopes late into the week.

Daniela Lange, 32, died in a hospital after surviving 36 hours under the rubble, and 24-year-old Juan Felipe Giraldo was found dead after an intense operation at a collapsed head.

Giraldo, whose father spent days by the collapsed building, waiting for news, had been set to get married on Aug. 16. He leaves behind a 2-year-old son.

Thousands of people gathered in the cities of Medellin and Bogota to donate food, clothing and medicine to donation centers for distribution to areas devastated by the quake.

Officials: Russia aiming to exploit dispute between Poland, Ukraine

WABEAM, Poland — Russia has significantly stopped up its online disinformation campaign in Poland, using a dispute between Warsaw and Kyiv over World War II massacres to inflame tensions between Ukraine and its key ally, Polish officials and researchers say.

The messaging, mostly posted on the first massacres credit to Polish, also focuses on fomenting anger in Poland against refugees as opinion polls show support for the far right growing ahead of closely contested parliamentary elections in 2027.

The long running World War II dispute centers on the Valhynia massacres, in which Poland says Ukrainian killed, because the 2028 Pabst between 1943 and 1945. Thousands of Ukrainian died in reprisal killings.

The dispute intensified after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy named an army unit after insurgents who perpetrated the massacres, prompting hard-right President Karel Nowoticki to strip his Ukrainian counterpart of a top Polish honor in June.

Polish Deputy Digital Minister Paweł Olszewski told Reuters the dispute saw Russian disinformation "explode" across local and official Russian media platforms, including Telegram, in posts later reported by Polish militia.

Much of the increase across those platforms and others appeared to be artificially generated through lost activity designed to create the impression of rapidly growing anti-Ukrainian sentiment, said PISM's Filip Bojka.

The messaging focused largely on amplifying the controversy rather than disseminating false information, in what analysis said may be a new Russian disinformation issue.

Moscow denies spreading disinformation and says Western leaders are intentionally exaggerating the threat from Russia for their ownpolitical ends.

"The Russian Federation does not interfere in the relations between other states," the Russian Embassy in Warsaw said in an unsalid statement.

Because the underlying facts are often real, analysts say such campaigns are harder to identify and counter than conventional disinformation through false news. "The event is real, but the interpretation is imposed by an external actor," said Wojciech Pokora, an analyst at Info Ops Poland Foundation.

Though Poland remains a staunch ally of Ukraine in its war against Russia, opinion polls show deteriorating support for Ukraine. An IBNM poll in early July found that 33.6% of respondents said their attitude toward Ukrainian had worsened following the dispute linked to World War II.

A separate IBNM survey in July found support for continued military assistance to Ukraine had fallen to 52% from 76% in 2022.

No oil vessels tranniting strait

Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent each pledged to inflict more fi-

nancial damage on Iran. Bessent told Newsmax's "Bob Schmidt Tonight" program on Aug 10 that announcements of more massacre against Iran were coming in the days ahead.

Tobson calls its enforcement of strait traffic a blockade — the term Washington cases for its threat against Iranian vessels leaving their ports.

projectile in the strait on Aug. 14. It was not immediately clear if it was referring to the name incident involving the ABNOC vessel.

A tentative June deal to end the war is in tatters.

"We did not have a crusader in the first place that we would now want to extend," Arasghi said. "We had the end of the war, and now there is a new situation."

Since last year, the United States, Ecuador and El Salvador have announced they are stepping up maritime counter-narcotics cooperation in the eastern Pacific, a key cocaine corridor for northbound shipments. The effort includes intelligence-sharing, surveillance and coordinated interdictions.

The Pentagon directed questions about the strikes to U.S. Southern Command, which declined to comment citing "operational security and force protection reasons."

Ecuadoran President Daniel Noboa did not respond to Reuters' request for comment and the military said information about drug enforcement was classified. El Salvador's Navy did not respond to comment requests but said in a Manila 23 Facebook post that it had rescued 26 shipwrecked Ecuadorans.

Villavoxos remains so shaken by the experience he has yet to return to sea. "Mattei Ive given up fishing for good," he said.

Extorting $1,200 to 'fess'

The Negro Francisco was usually anchored in San Mateo, a port town where most residents live in poverty.

In recent years, two of Ecuador's most powerful criminal organizations — Los Cisneros and Los Lobos — have expanded in coastal areas, forcibly recruiting fishermen for smuggling, according to Ecuadoran anti-narcotics officials, provincial police and residents.

Police and local people said fishermen who shall cooperate are often forced to pay "fess" of $1,200 per fishing trip — three or four times their earnings in an average month, foods say — or not, retaliation against themselves and their families.

If they do transport cocaine, they can earn an extra tax $40,000 a trip, according to fishermen in San Mateo and Jazamijo, their relatives and police.

Asked about the alleged extortion, Ecuador's national police said — fishermen are forced to take part in these activities, exposing themselves both to law enforcement action and hospitals from the criminal organizations."

Maria Mero, who is married to a fisherman from the French, said some men were cutting back on trips because of threats from traffickers and military strikes. "The fishermen don't even want to go out now," she said.

A San Mateo fisherman said he had paid extortion fees four times. In return, he said the gang provided coordinates of a route he was allowed to sail and urged him to keep his lights on so he wouldn't be approached for another payment.

Smaller boats fishing closer to shore are charged less and given a type of ID to show they've paid the extorted fees, he said.

Banana boats and tuna trawlers

The joint drug-enforcement efforts of the United States, El Salvador and Ecuador coincide with Southern Japan, the U.S. air strike campaign, and Operation Pacific Vque, a parallel U.S. Coast Guard crackdown.

While Southern Command has published right vision videos of targeted boats bursting into flames, it has generally only disclosed casualty figures and limited information about survivors.

Leonel Pilar, 21, who was injured along with Villavoxos in the March 9 attack, said the crew wasn't running drugs and its boat had been boarded and soushed by Ecuador's Coast Guard boats before the show took over.

"No are fishermen," he told Reuters. "The Ecuadoran Coast Guard boarded us, searched us, found nothing."

The crew of the Don Maca also reported thing struck by a drone in Ecuadoran waters, according to accounts gathered by the Pentagon Committee on Human Rights. They told a similar story — being picked up by people they believed to be Americans and turned over to a Salvadoran Navy boat before they, too, were repatriated.

Mike Vigit, the former international operations chief of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, said there was "abundant evidence" that U.S. Southern Command carried out the boat strikes from the survivors' testimony and what he called a "distinctive mil-

itary footprint."

He noted that Ecuador's Navy doesn't have the drone technology to conduct strikes.

Benato Rivera, a senior analyst at the Geneva-based Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime, said Wagner Bravo, former head of Ecuador's Army, agreed that it was likely the United States conducted the strikes on the two boats because of their location, the ongoing U.S. campaign of attacks on alleged drug boats and the lack of any other actor in the region capable of such air strikes.

The United States and Ecuador say high-sens interdictions are critical to fight drug traffickers, and both countries have celebrated major seizures this year. Secretary of War Pete Neguchi said Southern Spain would "secure our Hosnihood from the drugs that are killing our people."

But such efforts are unlikely to slow cocaine trafficking as long as the cartels have a big map pool of fishermen to recruit and extinct, high-sens. "Missing other boats is not going to stop anything," he said.

And despite the cartels increased use of small fishing vessels, the vast majority of cocaine shipments continue to move through big commercial ports, said Michelle Maffei, an organized crime expert at the University of Guayaquil in Ecuador.

"Your current government, together with the United States, is placing too much emphasis on go-bait boats," she said. "The fact that they are skoning more fishermen, more people living in poverty and more vulnerable people into this activity is not going to stop simply because they are dropping bombs at sea."

The drug traffickers can simply replace those who are killed or arrested.

"Organized crime understands a certain reality," she said. "Everyone is replaceable."

A Reuters analysis of 26 grocery categories tracked by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and featured in Trump's Bedminster display found prices have risen 5.4% in the first 20 months of his second term. That's less than a quarter of the year, and even the same point in former President Joe Biden's term, but still falls short of Trump's pledge to lower prices, as surges in coffee, beef and apples have more than offset declines in items including sugar and butter.

A White House official pointed to data on Aug. 12 that showed U.S. consumer prices barely increased in July from the month before as evidence that inflation is under control.

The American report is further proof that President Trump's long-term agenda is delivering. Prescription drug and auto insurance costs continue to fall, real wages are rising, and beef prices have cooled while other household essentials like eggs, poultry and dairy remain low," the official said.

Lack of enthusiasm

A registered Republican, Carney said high grocery and gasoline prices due to the time war were among the reasons she had grown disillusioned enough to consider sitting out the midterms, underscoring recent polling suggesting Republicans are less enthusiastic about

Carney was one of 17 Republicans and independents Reuters interviewed in New Jersey's 7th Congressional District, a battleground that includes Bedminster and where young voters and turnout could prove decisive. Thirty views on the economy mirror those of other Trump supporters Reuters has interviewed in recent months who, despite standing by the president, say financial pressures have dampened their enthusiasm for voting in November. That ambivalence presents another potential challenge for Republicans and raises the stakes for the party's get-out-the-vote operation.

Francesco Treblei, a public policy professor in the University of California, Berkeley, recently coauthored research finding that Trump drew stronger support at the 2024 election in counties where inflation outpaced income growth, eroding households' purchasing power.

With real wages rising only marginally and lagging the pace of broader economic growth, Treblei said it is likely that parties will reverse in November.

"I expect the same anti-incumbent shift to happen in 2026, this time possibly weakening Republicans," he said, describing grocery shopping as a "psy-

chologically salient" reminder of the squeeze on household finances. "Each time one does it, it is the equivalent of a campaign ad against the incumbent."

Trump support

To be sure, presidents have limited influence over inflation, which is driven by a range of factors and more directly addressed by the Federal Reserve. And many Republicans appear willing to give Trump the benefit of the doubt, even as his tariffs and the time was have contributed to rising prices.

Bennie Chandler, 64, plans to vote for Kean, saying she believed some companies were keeping prices elevated to make Trump look bad and that the growing influence of the Democratic Party's progressive faction left her unwilling to consider its candidates.

"Engraving even Republican, I'm not a woke person. I'm not a communist. I'm not a socialist," she said.

Lauren DeGordano, a 34-year-old Trump-voice, said issues such as education and border security matter of issues to her than grocery prices, which she believes have stabilized under Trump following steep increases during the Biden administration.

"I feel grocery prices are pretty much at level with whose they were during Biden. I know some of the key things that I look for — eggs — have gone down," she said, adding that she intended to vote for Republican candidates in November.

According to Bill Saha, egg prices have fallen nearly 40% under Trump, reflecting a market connection after not an flu-driven shortages triggered a surge that began during Biden's presidency. Eggs are among six of the 26 categories showing falls since 2025, along

with butter, bacon, and cooking fats and oils.

Yet most of the items Trump displayed at Bedminster are now prices, some by a lot. Uncooked beef has jumped 39.2%, fresh fish and seafood 8.6%, apples 34%, and coffee nearly 25%.

Hitting close to home

A Reuters/Ipsos poll that concluded earlier in August found Trump's net approval rating on his handling of the cost of living was at 47%, down from 4% at the start of his term. It is his weakest in such a wide margin, trailing the ratings on the economy (-35%) and immigration (-16%).

Bennett told Reuters that if elected she would seek to undo Trump's tariffs, rein in the loan war, and restore food stamp benefits to help families struggling to afford groceries.

The issue lists close to home, said Bennett, a military veteran and married mother of two daughters. "She is not an abstract concept to me," she said. "For example, beef is very expensive, so we don't buy beef anymore."

Whether Kean, whose campaign did not respond to requests for comment, can hold on to his vast may depend on voices like Margaret Derbach, who typically votes Republican but is now considering switching her vote if economic conditions don't improve.

"The cost of living, as far as homes, apartments and food — the economics — they have gone up. It's shocking, shocking," said Derbach, 84, after shopping at discount grocer Ahli.

Though she said Trump "inherited a mess" from Biden, Derbach added, "I am undecided right now. I have to see."

Scheffler up 2 shots entering final round

Even with his lofty status in the golf world in recent years, Scottie Scheffler will be in a lot of a different situation compared to most tournaments this year for the final round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

He's the frontrunner after shooting 2-under-par 68 to maintain the lead Saturday in Memphis, Tenn., as he aims for his first victory since January.

"Strategy is still the same, just go out there and execute," Scheffler said. "This is a golf course where that's really all it comes down to. I'll just do my best to go out there tomorrow and be committed and try and execute."

Scheffler moved to 13-under 197 for a two-stroke lead on Sam Burns and South Korea's Kunjun but at TFC Southwind, where the opening event of the FedEx Cup playoffs is taking place.

Burns rose into contention with a bogey-free 62 that included three consecutive birdies at one point.

"You feel like this golf course you get in the fairway a bunch and you feel like you can make a bunch of birdies," Burns said. "You get in the rough and you feel like you're scrambling for par."

Im, who was Scheffler's playing partner Saturday, posted 67. For the second round in the tournament, Im had a better score than Scheffler.

"I was watching him playing a lot of good shots and learned a lot," Im said. "Hopefully, I can keep it going."

This is the first of three tournaments in the PGA Tour's postseason.

Josh Allen passed for 81 yards and one touchdown and the Buffalo Bills opened Highmark Stadium with a 29-14 victory over the Carolina Panthers in a preseason game at Orchard Park, N.Y., on Saturday afternoon.

Allen tossed a 9-yard touchdown pass to Keon Coleman in the first quarter and completed 6-of-8 passes in the club's preseason opener. It also was Buffalo's first game since Sean McDermott was fired as coach and replaced by Joe Brady.

The new stadium is located right next to where the former can resided, and the Bills made themselves comfortable as Ian Wheeler and Frank Gore Jr. scored on fourth-quarter runs to boost Buffalo's lead to 29-7.

Cardinals RB have out for at least one week

Arizona Cardinals rookie running back Jeremiych Love will be out at least one week with an ankle injury, head coach Mike LaFleur said on Saturday.

Per LaFleur, Love was a 'little more sure' than expected after Arizona's 27-14 preseason victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday. The coach initially told reporters after the game that Love could've gone back into the contest if needed. Love turned it carries into 58 yards during the game.

Also on Saturday LaFleur said rookie guard Chase Bisonte will head to injured reserve. Bisonte tore his MCL after Raiders defensive lineman Brandon Cleveland fell on his left knee on Thursday.

'He'll be out for a good amount of time, if not the whole year,' LaFleur said. 'Obtain for him. Always think about the player first. Obtain for him Cardinals, too. He's a good player but more importantly you hate it for the player.'

Love, the third overall pick of the 2026 NFL Draft out of Notre Dame, will sit out next Saturday's preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Love, 21, was a lineman Trophy finalist last season at Notre Dame, finishing third behind Indiana quarterback Fernando Monchita and Vanderbilt Q's Diego Perini. He won the Doak Walker Award for the top running back in college football.

He ranked up 100 carries for 1,972 yards and 38 touchdowns, as well as 27 receptions for 289 yards and three TDs in 2025. He averaged 6.9 yards per carry and his 21 total touchdowns broke the Fighting Irish's single-season record set by Jerome Britto (2D) in 398.

The Cardinals selected Bisonte, 22, in the second round (34th overall) out of Texas A&M.

Vikings safety Adams carted off field in first half against Giants

Veteran defender Jamal Adams was carted off the field in his first game with the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday.

Adams, 30, appeared to sustain the injury during a touchdown play in the second quarter, when Jasson Dart connected with Malachi Fields for a 25-yard pass. Adams stumbled while defending receiver Calvin Austin III and stayed on the turf. Adams then entered the medical tent and a cart was brought to take him to the locker room for further examination.

Texans sign quarterback Ryplen, place Moritz on 18 with torn ACL

The Houston Texans signed veteran Brett Ryplen to a contract on Saturday and placed fellow quarterback Graham Moritz on season-ending injured reserve.

The move comes two days after Moritz tore his ACL during the Texans' 27-7 preseason loss to the visiting Los Angeles Chargers.

Ryplen, 35, will be the third quarterback on the depth chart behind starter L.J. Stroud and veteran backup Darta Mills.

Ryplen has made four NFL starts since entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2019 with the Denver Broncos. He has passed for 950 yards, four touchdowns and nine interceptions in 2 games with the Broncos, Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals.

Ryplen played college football at Boise State and holds the Mountain West

career passing yardage record of 19.5/76. He is the nephew of Mark Ryplen, who played ENFL seasons (1988-97, 2010) for five teams and was MVP of Super Bowl XXVI for Washington.

A sixth-round draft pick in 2025, Moritz sustained a knee injury during a scramble late in the second quarter. Before leaving, he completed 4 of 7 passes for 23 yards.

Moritz, 25, spent most of his rookie season on the injured list. He dealt with a leg injury during his senior season at Florida.

Moritz, who played at Wisconsin (2019-22) and Florida (2023-24), did not appear in a regular-season game in 2025.

Bengals veteran defensive tackle Hill cleared to start practicing

Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle R.J. Hill passed a physical exam and was cleared to return to practice Saturday.

The 36-year-old veteran was placed on the active physically unable to perform list on July 25 following offseason, while surgery.

Hill, who is entering his sixth season with the Bengals, started all 37 games last season and recorded four sacks, nine quarterback hits and 64 tackles.

He has posted 27.5 sacks, 75 QB hits, 407 tackles, four fumble recoveries and two interceptions in 129 career games (84 starts) with the New York Giants

(2018-20) and Bengals. New York drafted him in the third round in 2018.

Seahawks veteran cornerback Witherspoon lands $132M deal

The Seattle Seahawks are in agreement with Devon Witherspoon on a four-year, $132 million extension that makes him the highest goal cornerback in NFL history. E&FF's reported Saturday.

The deal reportedly includes more than $83 million over the total money for Witherspoon, a Pro Bowl selection in each of his first three seasons and a Super Bowl champion last season.

The contract's $35 million average annual value succeeds the $31.1 million earned by Cleveland Broncos cornerback Denial Ward and the $35 million earned by the Los Angeles Rams' Trent McDuffie, per Over The Cup.

Witherspoon, 25, was the fifth overall pick from Illinois with a 24-24 24-24 tackles, 4.5 sacks and two interceptions in 43 games for fourth. He also had a sack in the 29-13 win against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 32.

Witherspoon returned an interception 97 yards for a touchdown against the New York Giants during his 2023 rookie campaign.

The Seahawks exercised Witherspoon's fifth-year option in March, which did just the same $112 million in 2027. He is due a base salary of $1.45 million in 2026.

Seahawks veteran EDGE Lawrence: 'This will be my last year'

Seattle Seahawks defensive end DeMarcos Lawrence plans to retire following the 2026 season, his 18th in the NFL.

The five-time Pro Bowl selection is still a 'halse' (post-reporter) on Friday that 'this will be my last year.'

Lawrence, 34, won the Super Bowl with Seattle last season following 11 campaigns with the Dallas Cowboys.

He made 16 starts in 2025, recorded six sacks and recovered those funders' two of them for touchdowns.

Lawrence said he wants to spend more time with his wife and six children back in Dallas, and that he thought about retiring after last season.

'It was a tough process,' he said. 'But through the game of back, I'm able to play another year and soak it all up one more good time before I hang it up.'

Lawrence has 67.5 sacks, 50.1 tackles, 140 QB hits, 24 fronts/fumbles, 8 fumble recoveries and two interceptions in 107 career games with the Cowboys (2014-24) and Seahawks. Dallas drafted him in the second round in 2014 and he made the Pro Bowl in 2017, 2018, 2022, 2023 and 2025.

Tirante stuns Djokovic in Cincinnati

Argentina's Thiago Agustin Tirante noticed the biggest win of his career Saturday, dispatching No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the second round of the Cincinnati Open at Mason, Ohio.

Tirante recorded 33 aces and 40 winners against Dikijoki, who wilted under the Midwest heat and humidity. Tirante finished off a wobbly Djokovic in two hours and 44 minutes.

"I think this is the best win of my career," Tirante said. "I think I really did a good job inside the court. I managed very well the nerves of playing against a legend like Novak. Now I Am relieved because it is all so much pressure when you cannot break (nerves) I had to many points to break and I couldn't, so this was the key, to keep believing in myself with my team and think about it after the match."

Djokovic saved 13 of 15 break points but committed 40 unforced errors and seven double faults. He had 25 winners and five aces.

Tirante finished a first match since losing to Italy's Janelik Stunse in last month's Wimbledon semifinals and he had trouble dealing with the conditions.

"It was not an enjoyable match for me, for sure," Djokovic said. "The way I did. Not the first and I guess not the last time, but it is what it is."

Djokovic, 39, said he is dealing with a health issue that affected him on the court.

Still, Djokovic had 3, 2 in the fourth set before he deteriorated further physically.

Tirante, 25, stepped up and won four of five games to complete the stunning upset and improve to 4-1 against Top 10 players.

The 29th-seeded Czwalinska, who went from qualifier to finalist in Paris, won her first WTA 2000 match of the season. There were eight breaks of serve in the match, with Czwalinska converting 6 of 3. She won 20 of Buesa's 40 seven (80.9%) in the match.

While the first three rounds of the Standard Portland (the) Classic have provided some twists and turns, they haven't yet provided clarity.

Going into the final day, Thailand's Arjachaya Yubol and American Sophia Schubert co-lead with a two-shot lead on the rest of the field.

Yubol, seeking her first ever LPGA tournament win, shot her worst round of the tournament Saturday with a 4-under-par 68 after back-to-back 66s.

Yet, the 24-year-old who had come into the day with the lead didn't show signs of willing, shaking off a solitary bogey on 15 to rescue par on each of her final three holes. Her start included three birdies over the first seven holes, and she added two more on Helen Di Si.

"I can say just kind of snow exultes for me," Yubol said. "I didn't focus any score that much, but I just do my best on my games, try to like control my driver, my guitar, everything."

Schubert, 30, is also in search of her first career win, She finished a shot better than Yubol at 67 with seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.

American Vaughn Taylor matched Allen's 40 with his five birdies and solitary bogey. That was good enough to lead him in second place at 8 under.

Since PGA is the tournament's seven Kjeldsen are tied for third at 7 under.

Flesch was 1 under for the day until he pocketed an eagle on the par-5 IRIS to get to 69.

Kjeldsen carded a 67 following an up-and-down day.

The top 50 players in terms of season-long points advanced to next week's BMW Championship Scheffler entered this week atop the points standings.

Scheffler hasn't won since his first tournament (The American Express) of the season yet remains the World No. 1 as he has produced 8 top-10 finishes. His first bogey of the third round came on the fourth hole, and he didn't post his first birdie of the day until No. 6.

He had another bogey at No. 17 after his approach shot went into a bunker, so

he has dealt with a pair of bogeys in both the second and third rounds.

Scheffler will be pasted with Burns, who he considers a close friend, on Sunday.

"It's always a little weird just because I want him to have success so much and I think he wants the same for me," Scheffler said. "Tomorrow we'll go out there and play our game and see where things finish up at the end of the day."

Burns knows what to expect. "Scottie is obviously playing great, as he always does," Burns said. "He's not going to lay down. He's going to play great tomorrow. So you're going to have to go out there and put a really good round together and see if you can catch

him."

Jake Knapp (67) and England's Tommy Fleetwood (68) are tied for fourth place at 8 under.

"I've got one more day," said Fleetwood, who was 2 under through seven holes Saturday. "If we can get off to another fast start, that would be great."

Brian Harman (69), South Korea's Di Woo Kim (65), Sweden's Alex Noron (66) and Japan's Hideki Matsuyama (67) are all at 7 under.

Harman is outside the top 10 going into Sunday, so he still needs to make headway. He said his worst putting round of the tournament came Saturday.

"It has been a tough year, hasn't been

awesome," Harman said. "It's just been kind of one thing or the other. I feel like I'm playing some good golf. Hopefully it will pop tomorrow. If not, get an extra week at home with the family."

Norway's Viktor Hovland briefly caught up to Scheffler before a tremendous stretch that resulted in a 72. He tumbled to a tie for fifth place at 8 under.

Hovland played the ninth through 20th holes in 5 over – and that came with a birdie on No. 12. Two-wayward shots on the par-4 1210 resulted in a pair of penalty strokes and he carded 4 on the hole.

Jordan Speth, who was a first-round co-leader, also shot 72 on Saturday for 5 at 4 under and tied for 19th.

Baez first to hit 3 HRs in MLB debut

Joshua Baez might have made the best first impression in major league history on Saturday.

Baez became the first player ever to hit three homers in his big league debut, as he hoped the St. Louis Cardinals record an 8-4 victory over the host Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

"It's just uncool. Baez said after delivering free RRs. 'To not only get a hit, but these home runs? It's crazy.'"

Baez, 23, came up with one on in the opening inning and hit the first pitch he saw from Matthew Boyd left first to center for his first homer.

He led off his fourth by belting a full count-dragegong from Boyd over the wall to left to give St. Louis a 4-3 lead.

In the ninth, Boyd again couldn't solve the rookie as Baez sent a 10-0 after over the wall, he right for a two-run shot to make it 6-3.

"I was just really glad that the ball went over the wall," Baez said. "I had no idea. So I kept started running, and then I seen that it went over and I was like, 'This is insane.'"

Cubs manager Craig Crumwell was amazed at what he was witnessing.

He hit three different pitches for better runs. He had a great game," Crumwell said, "He was so far now."

Baez hit Louis No. 3 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. He was recalled from Triple-A Memphis after shifting 54 homers to 103 games. He was batting 256 with 90 RRs and 22 steals.

The Cardinals optimized third baseman Cesar Prieto to Memphis in a corresponding move. He was just 6 for 10 in 12 games with St. Louis.

Mets 5, Nationals 4

Francisco Jacobs had the walk-off RBI single in the ninth inning Saturday, as the hunt then took Mets edged the Washington Nationals, 5-4, in the middle game of a three-game series.

The Mets left two runners on in the eighth before surging back against Yavango (out 0-0), who got just one out in the ninth. Brett Katz opened the inning with a walk and Jorge Polanco singled before Katz raced home on Francisco Alvarez's double to left.

A J. Ewing got ahead 3-0 before striking out, after which Lindea hit a 12 pitch to deep right field to score Cristian Parke, who was pinch-running for Polanco.

Blue Jays 4, Yankees 1

Charles McAdoo doubled in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning Saturday afternoon, and the Toronto Blue Jays updated the visiting New York Yankees 4-1.

McAdoo also had an RBI single in the two-run eighth as Toronto clinched the three-game series by winning the first two.

Spencer Miles (5-2) pitched around a single with the aid of a caught stealing in the seventh to pick up the win.

Louis Vaillant struck out the side in the ninth to runs for 20th sure.

Brad Houston (6-2) allowed one run in the seventh to take the loss.

Marlins 8, Reds 4

Heidlerto Hernandez hit a tiebreak-up two-run single in the eighth to lift the visiting Miami Marlins to an 8-4 comeback victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday.

Jakob Maroon was 4-for-4 with a solo home run, while Jan Mack was 3-for-3 with a solo shot as Miami snapped a four-game road shot and crossed the three-game set.

Mianita Tyler Zafer (2-0) allowed two hits and struck out one in a scoreless inning of rules.

For the Reds, Matt McLain was 3-for-4 with a double and a homer, Sir Bryan Hayes also homered and Sal Stewart had two hits, including a two-run single.

Brewers 6, Dodgers 1

Jacob Malarowski went six strong innings, Joey Ortiz and William Contreras hit home runs and the visiting Milwaukee Brewers crossed the season series against the Los Angeles Dodgers with a 4-1 victory Saturday.

The long half-offtone was plenty for Malarowski (12-5), who gave up one run on five hits with one walk and six strikeouts to earn a win for the first time in three starts. The National League Cy Young Award favorite now has a 175 ERA.

Milwaukee has a two-game lead over the Dodgers in the National League with each team winning three times against the other this season. The season series will be decided in Sunday's finale of a four-game series.

Shohei Ohtani had an RBI triple, while Jeff Sander, Justin Wroblewski (3-0) gave up four runs on four hits over six innings. After earning a spot on the NL All-Star team, Wroblewski has now allowed at least four runs in each of his last four starts.

Orioles 4, Rays 3, 10 Innings

Tyler O'Neill singled in Colton Cowser in the 30th inning as the Baltimore Orioles won their second straight one-run affair Saturday night against American League East-betting Tampa Bay, edging the Rays 4-3 in their four-game series as St. Petersburg, Fla.

Following O'Neill's run-scoring hit, Baltimore reliever Cam Sanders whiffed Richie Palacios in an eight-pitch at-bat with two runners on to preserve the win and reach his second save in two nights and third overall.

Pete Allison was 3-for-3 with a homer, and Christian Rocamacico-Strand signed a solo shot. Leedy Deveras had two hits and an RBI.

Orioles' starter Kyle Bradshaw yielded

two runs on seven hits. He walked four and struck out three.

Jonathan Ananda went 3-for-5, while Chandler Simpson and Sandy Diaz had two hits for Tampa Bay.

Starting pitcher Ian Seymour fanned nine in six innings with a walk, but he surrendered three runs – two on six runners – in the 1st.

Chase Bryan Baker (1-0) gave up the game-winning hit against his former team.

Guardians 6, Padres 1

Joey Cantillo and three relievers combined to allow just one hit and the Cleveland Guardians knocked off visiting San Diego's 1-m Saturday, snapping the Padres' six-game winning streak.

Cantillo (9-7) held the Padres hitless after allowing Jake Cressmanoff's single in the first inning. He walked three and struck out seven over six innings.

Colin Holdenman, Hunter Gaddis and Erik Salzewski followed by combining to throw three hitless innings to seal the 10,000th victory in Cleveland franchise history.

In Adell, Patrick Bailey and Steven Kean each doubled in a run for Cleveland, which won for just the third time in its last big game. Adult Kean and Chase DeLauter each had two hits.

The Guardians recorded 11 hits and dealt the Padres just their fifth loss in their last 22 games.

San Diego took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Fernando Tatro Jr. drew a leadoff walk, moved to third on Commonwealth's single, and scored on Atlanta Manilla's double play ground.

Cantillo settled in after the opening home and completed six innings for the first time since June 26.

Mariners 10, Astros 5

Emerson Hancock matched his career-high by working seven innings, and the Seattle Mariners rode a four-run second inning to a 10-5 victory over the East Houston Astros on Saturday.

Hancock (7-7) snapped a three-skirt Joeng skitt while topping seven innings for the fifth time in his career. He surrendered two runs on five hits and two walks with eight strikeouts, throwing 97 pitches.

The Mariners erased a 1-0 deficit in the top of the second when Julie Reddy gave, Josh Naylor and Cole Young strided successive singles off Astros right-handed. Hayden Wrenoski (2-1) to open the frame. Young plated Rodriguez with an infield single that handcuffed Wrenoski, tying the score at 14. Two batters later, Victor Robles delivered a two-run triple to right-center field.

Red Sox 4, Pirates 0

Sonny Gray threw seven scoreless innings and Wigley Alberts second-inning solo home run pitch the Boston Red Sox on course for a 4-0 shutout of the best Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night.

Gray (10-3) set a career-high for wins and leads the American League in that category. Gray struck out seven and walked one on 10 pitches to lead the Red Sox to their second win in three games following a five-game losing streak.

Alberts Kwan run with one out in the second off Purdue starter Janet Jones (2-5) was one of three hits in the game. It sustained a month-knit start for Jones, who struck out seven, walked two and gave up just the one run on four hits over five innings.

Diamondbacks 10, Braves 2

Eduardo Rodriguez pitched six strong innings and Nolan Arenado hit a pair of home runs to help the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks defeat the Atlanta Braves 10-3 on Saturday, clinching the three-game series.

Rodriguez (12-4), who settled down after giving up two first-sitting runs, allowed five hits, struck out five and did not issue a win for the first inning in three battles between the second and fifth innings and improved to 5-0 in his last seven road starts.

Arenado, who was 3-for-4 with a walk, three runs and four RRs, hit a two-run homer in the third inning and a solo shot in the seventh, giving him 20 for the season. It was his second two-homer game of the season and 26th of his career.

Gabriel Moreno faithless hits and an RBI and Illeman Vargas added a three-run homer in the ninth to complete the Diamondbacks 13-3 at attack.

Grant Holmes (7-5) lost the first time since June 22. He worked 7,2-7 innings and allowed six runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three.

Phillies 8, Twins 1

Brycea Hunt slapped a three-run homer to cap a seven-run fifth inning, and Alex Bride delivered a seven-high five hits for the Philadelphia Phillies to a 9-1 solo against the Minnesota Twins on Saturday night in Minneapolis.

Bryce Harper contributed two hits and scored a run, and Edmundo Sosa and J. T. Brublante drove in two runs each for Philadelphia, which won the opener 10 or three-game series, 7-5, on Thursday night as the Field of Dreams game in Dyceville, Iowa, ending a two-game shot.

Phillies left-hander Jesus Lozardo (8-0) sent 4,2-3 innings, allowing one run and scattering seven hits while striking out nine and walking two.

Luke Rasmull had two hits on his 24th birthday and Xander Culpepper also had two hits for the Twins, who fell to 4-9 this month.

Minnesota rookie left-hander Connor Presley (1-6) was tagged for a season-high eight runs and eight hits in five innings. He struck out six and walked four.

Angels 1, Royals 0

Reid Detmers allowed two hits and struck out 2-over eight shutout innings and Nolan Schanzel had three hits and threw in the waiting list in the eighth inning as the Los Angeles Angels edged the Kansas City Royals 0-1 on Saturday night in Anaheim, Calif.

It was the first home win in 22 starts for Detmers (4-0), who entered the contest tied with Kather Crawford and Alex Cobb for the most consecutive home starts without a win in American League history (22). It also staged a nine-shot winless streak for Detmers.

Detmers, who was 3-for-4, came on major league start, retired the first that he faced before Ice Cagliarone singled in the fourth inning, returning Cagliarone's hitting streak to 10 games. He struck out the side in both the third and seventh innings and left after throwing 92 pitches, 60 for strikes.

Rangers 5, Athletics 3

Wyatt Langford hit a go-ahead two-run homer as part of a 5-for-4 outing to lead the Texas Rangers to a 5-3 victory over the Athletics on Saturday night at West Sacramento, Calif.

Corey Seager had two hits and one RBI and Mackenzie Gore ended a four-start winless stretch for Texas, which halted a four-game losing streak. Jacob Latz recorded a two-inning save as the Rangers scored back into third and final walk-and-spot.

Henry Belie went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer for the Athletics, who lost for the 16th time in the past 20 courses. Ailsa Williams had two hits for the 3-6, who have dropped nine of their last 10 home games.

Gore (7-9) gave up three runs and eight hits over 2-2-3 innings. He struck out five and walked two before the bullpen followed with 3-2-3 hitless innings.

Chase Smith recorded the final out of the sixth and Jakob Latus pitched a perfect seventh for Texas. Latz walked a batter in the eighth and tossed a flawless ninth in a 36-pitch effort to mount his 24th save and his seventh of two innings.

Miles, Lynx find more ways to defeat Aces

Olivia Miles strengthened her case for WNBA Rookie of the Year with 23 points and eight assists, catapulting the league-leading Minnesota Lynx to a 92-87 road victory over the Las Vegas Aces Saturday night.

Natasha Howard was on top of her game as well with a double-double of 23 points and 3 rebounds for the Lynx (29-7), who have won four in a row - including a home defeat of Las Vegas last Saturday - and 14 of their last 15.

Naplesona Collier recorded 19 points, Kayla McBride contributed 13, and Nic Coffey and Courtney Williams added 12 points apiece.

The Aces (24-22) lost despite a sensational 32-point performance from four-time MVP Aja Wilson, who shot 10-0-10 from the field, made 3 of 12 free- three attempts and also grabbed seven rebounds.

Nalyana Smith recorded a double-double of 37 points and 12 rebounds for the ongoing league change, who saw their two-game winning streak end Chelsea Gray and Jewell Loyd scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Collier scored the first four points of the second half, getting the Lynx in front 32-48 with 9-0-7 to go. Las Vegas got within two at 32-50 thanks to two free- three from Wilson at the nine-minute mark.

Minnesota responded with a 10-2-run, taking its first double-double digit lead at 62-52 on a 3-pointer from Nic Coffey, forcing the Aces to burn a time-out with 5-84 left in the third.

Las Vegas was within 62-59 with 2.29 left after a pair of front-streaks from Wilson. But the Lynx closed on a 12-5 run to lead 74-64 leading to the fourth.

The Aces opened the fourth on a 9-0 run, getting within 74-73 on a jumper from Gray with 7.27 to play.

Back-to-back 3-pointers from Collier gave the Lynx an 80-73 lead and some breathing room at the 6-48 mark.

Collier's two free throws with 0.3 seconds left end the win.

Liberty 82, Sun 75

Jonquet Jones collected 23 points and 0 rebounds as the visiting New York Liberty withstood a slow start and sensed an 82-75 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Saturday afternoon in Uncasville, Conn.

Jones made 9 of 16 shots for her fourth double-double in the past five games and 15th overall. Jones finished three points 4dy of her season high and scored 19 in the first half when the Liberty-round 4.01-point defeat.

Marine Johnson added 14 of her 17 after halftime, including a pair of clutch 3-pointers to help the Liberty (22-14)

Stoudemire among enshrinees for 2026 class

Jana's Stoudemire headlined the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2026 as the group was initially enshrined Saturday night at Symphony Hall in Springfield, Mass.

Stoudemire, a six-time All-Star during a 14-year NBA career with the Phoenix Buns, New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks and Miami Heat, was part of an eight-member class of individuals enlistment.

The five-time All-NBA member spoke on the importance of perseverance and belief, key messages for someone who grew up in poverty.

"The most important aspect that I can give, that I experienced - when you're growing up in an environment when it's not easy to make it out of, the most important factor for me was, first of all, stay out of trouble...stay positive, stay focused, stay meaningful, and always keep in mind that perseverance, no matter what one goes through, one can persevere through anything." Stoudemire said.

Among Stoudemire among NBA honorees were legendary coach Glenn "Doc" Brown, game contributor Mike D'Antoni and longtime official Joey Crawford.

Brown, who won a championship with the Boston Celtics in 2008 and has played up 19.4 wins over a 27-year coaching career, also averaged 10.9 points per game in an 31-year trouser as a player.

"I was very excited by the three players who brought him a title in Boston-Fuel Force, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett.

"When you win a title, it's like receiving a blood transfusion. You three guys are connected for the rest of your lives -

you really are. And I want you guys to hear that, and understand that," Brown said.

D'Antoni helped revolutionize offense in the NBA, contributing to the modern approach to basketball featuring 3-pointers, the pick-and-roll offense, and a focus on spacing.

"Our players and coaches had the courage to embrace a different way of playing, and together, we influenced the game," D'Antoni said.

Crawford sat records for the most NBA playoff (274) and Finals (50) games worked, a testament to his ability as a referee.

"As the great Muhammad Ali once said 'it ain't beagging if you did it' - and I did," Crawford said.

Three WNBA standards were enshrined Saturday: Dena; Delie Donne; Chamique Hobbelaw and Candace Parker.

A two-time WNBA Most Valuable Player and 2009 champion with the Washington Mystics, Delie Donne said her goodbye to the player she once was.

"I've realized this speech isn't really about getting into the Hall of Fame. It's about saying goodbye. Not to basketball...but goodbye to the player I've been for as long as I can remember, where every season began with hope, every summer had a purpose, and every morning I woke up asking one question - how can I get better today?" Delie Donne said.

"I've spent my whole life in love with this game."

Hobbelaw, a three-time NCAA champion and six-time All-Star in the WNBA, spoke on the importance of mental health.

"Anyone carrying a weight that never shows up in the box score, I see you," Hobbelaw said. "Your straight-draw not disqualify you. Your story is not over and your greatness is still within you."

Parker, the two-time WNBA MVP and three-time champion called basketball bar "muse," while asking younger players to carry the touch well.

"There will be others that follow, but my wish is may you give it, may you love it, may you enjoy it, and may you leave it better."

The 1996 Team USA women's basketball team, which won gold at the Olympics, was also honored as a group.

That team, which included Hall of Famers Lisa Leslie, Rebecca Lohs, Susan Staley and Sheryl Swoopes, was instrumental in getting the WNBA off the ground.

"This team was the foundation of what the WNBA because," Lohs said. "It was that your together, of hard times and laughter, that made our team be able to be what it was."

Gonzaga coach Mark Few was inducted from the NCAA ranks on the strength of his 27 NCAA Tournament, two national title appearances with the Bulldogs and a pair of Naismith Coach of the Year honors (2007, 2020).

"This isn't about my trousers," Few said. "The greatest thing we built at Gonzaga wasn't a basketball program - it was a family and a culture. It kept people wanting to come back. That is one of the greatest rewards that a coach who has stayed at the same place gets to experience."

Leading goal scorers deliver draw in Montreal

Prince Owusu and Tai Basibo exchanged second-half goals as CF Montreal and visiting D.C. United played to a 1-0 draw on Saturday night.

The draw extends D.C. United's (5-5-0, 24 points) unbeaten streak to six matches (1-0-5). The Black-and-Red also have points in 0-47 12 months. D.C. United also improved to 4-7-6 all-time in MLS regular season action in Montreal.

Montreal (4-40-5, 17 points) has points in back-to-back matches but is still without a win since a 2-0 decision over Orlando City on May 9.

Owusu opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 50th minute.

D.C. United defender Kensile Kurekawa committed a handball in the area in the 49th minute.

On the ensuing penalty kick, Owusu put his strike just under the bar for his team-leading 8th goal.

Basibo pulled the visitors even in the 67th minute, heading a Kintets Noncross up and over keeper Thomas Gillier for his team-leading 32th goal and recording his scoring streak to five matches.

Montreal dominated first-half possession and had two shots on target as the two sides remained scoreless after 45 minutes.

Toronto FC 2, Revolution 1

Host Toronto FC worried a club-record window streak with a 2-1 win over the 49th England Revolution on Saturday night.

Toronto (4-7-6, 20 points) entered the game winless in their last 21 across all competitions. A Will Enoch over-goal and a Niklas Dorsch wonder-strike late in the first home helped them to their first multi-goal effort since the World Cup break.

Wilson Harris responded with his first MLS goal late in the effort following Dvorak McAdoo's 1-0 win at the 74th minute. The result marked New England's (9-7-5, 30 points) first-back-to-back defeats since the beginning of the season.

Toronto opened the scoring in the 43rd minute with their first attempt on target. Theo Colosana's cross attempt defended off the first of fourth and shattered up and over the boot of a squawling Matt Turner.

Charlotte scored two goals within the first nine minutes before fending off a relentless Columbus Crew side and securing a 3-1 home victory on Saturday night.

Charlotte's Allan Saint-Maximin and Columbus' Josef Martinez each made their MLS defense for their new teams. Martinez, the 20th league MVP and sixth-most prolific goal scorer in MLS history, played 19 minutes. Saint-Maximin played 16.

Goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina made three saves for Charlotte (8-7-4, 28 points). Patrick Schulte produced three saves for Columbus (5-9-5, 20 points).

Atlanta 2, N.Y. Red Bulls 1

Falk Picault scored the winning goal in the 82nd minute, and Atlanta United overcame an early deficit to defeat the visiting New York Red Bulls 2-1 on Saturday evening.

Despite conceding first in the sixth minute, Atlanta (4-12-3, 15 points) pulled most through Tommy Moyamba's equalizer in the 69th minute, then took the lead through Picault to walk off the pitch a winner in its first home match since May 9.

Atlanta United also snapped a seven-match winless streak (0-5-2).

Andy Najar and Sam Suroday also scored for Nashville (21-2-4, 43 points), who improved in the league's best record. Goalkeeper Brian Schwabe made four saves and Elias Saad had two assists as the club snapped a brief two-game winless streak.

Tobacco Soperia scored his third goal for Miami (0-9-5, 39 points), which suffered its first loss since May 2.

Houston 1, L.A. Galaxy 0

Guillaume scored an a first-half penalty kick and the Houston Dynamo picked up their fourth consecutive victory by defeating the visiting Los Angeles Galaxy 1-0 on Saturday night.

Jonathan Bond noticed his fourth consecutive shutout, but 8 didn't require a save as Houston prevented a shot on goal.

The Dynamo were exactly dynamic, with only five total shots and two on frame.

Houston (2-6-2, 35 points), who have a seven-match unbeaten streak, largely controlled the field of play. They maintained possession for nearly 58% of the 90 minutes.

The Galaxy (5-9-7, 22 points) are winless in their last six matches and haven't scored in either of their two outings this month.

Reggie Cannon and Rafael Navarro scored, while Youssef Mazzi and Paston Aaronson added assists to lead the Colorado Rapids to a 2-0 victory over Sporting Kansas City on Saturday in Commerce City, Colo.

Making his MLS debut as a second-half substitute, Mazzi launched a come-kick to the back post in the 60th minute that Cannon headed inside the new post to give Colorado (9-10-1, 25 points) a 1-0 lead.

Jorgi Solano scored in the 82nd minute as Salt Lake (8-6-4, 28 points) tied Minnesota for the second time this year and for the eighth time in their last 10 matchups.

Drake Calender had six saves for Minnesota (6-6-7, 25 points) and Rafael Cabral had six save for BSL.

It was the second time this year that the Lasso scored a late goal to earn a draw with BSL. On May 23, Mauricio Gonzalez tallied three minutes into second-half stoppage time in a 1-1 deadlock.

St. Louis 3, San Jose 1

Simon Becker supplied a loose Saturday night and visiting St. Louis City SC maintained an strong draw, who has lost three months with a 3-1 win over the San Jose Earthquakes.

Daniel Edelman also scored for St. Louis (8-6-5, 29 points), which improved to 7-0-2 over his last nine fixtures and moved into fifth in the Western Conference standings after languishing near the bottom of the end of April.

Brian Leroux scored the only goal for San Jose (10-6-5, 33 points), which dropped into fourth in the West with another poor defensive performance. The Earthquakes are 5-5 in the third last nine matches, largely due to an inability to maintain a consistent defensive shape.

Anders Dreyer scored from the penalty spot in the 89th minute and San Diego FC pulled off a 1-0 road victory against Los Angeles FC on Saturday.

Dreyer's left-footed attempt to the left side of the goal came after LAFC defender Ryan Porteous was called for a handball in the box on a header toward goal by San Diego's Jeppe Yorokov.

After starting the day fifth in the Western Conference standings, San Diego (8-7-6, 24 points) moved one point outside of the guard flare with its second road victory in nine from during Mid-July.

Logano stays hot, takes down field in Richmond

Joey Logano showed Saturday night that his impressive performance at North Wilkesboro Speedway last month was no fluke.

The Ford driver stayed hot in Virginia's capital and won for the second time in four starts, taking the checkers in the Cook Out 400 NASCAR Cup Series race at the Richmond Raceway short track in Richmond, Va.

The No. 32 Team Penske driver ran down Chase Briscoe's No. 19 Toyota over the final 17 laps after his final pit stop and scored his second win of 2026 by holding off Briscoe by 0.342 seconds.

His other victory was also on a short track in Cup racing's return to North Wilkesboro Speedway on July 19.

It was Logano's third career Richmond win and Ford's fourth victory of 2026.

With the win, the three-time champion jumped to ninth in the standings, up from 20th six races ago.

'I think so,' Logano said when asked if his team was championship material. 'We have a strong team, no doubt... (Briscoe) was better than us on that last run. It was a fun back-and-forth battle with some different strategies out there.'

'The price run to the pit stop, I just lost brakes, got really, really loose and gave up a 3-second advantage. That was ultimately the difference,' the Indiana native said. '... It's weird to be mad running second here. This place has been a

real struggle for me.

Just to be that close and not get it done is still frustrating.'

Austin Chubic, Money Humble and Chase Elliott completed the top five.

The racing was light at the start of 70-bp Stage I as polesitter Ryan Blaney took into play a second for 5-5 with facility until he was able to get away from Ron I mate Briscoe, who was soon

passed by Josh Berry in his final season in the No. 21 Wood Brothers Ford.

After the first cycle of pit stops, Blaney regained the point, with Briscoe and Berry right behind. However, last week's Iowa winner, Ty Gibbs, was nailed for speeding, and his No. 54 Toyota was sent to the rear of the field, which also happened him at North Wilkesboro.

Briscoe pressured Blaney on the final circuit of the segment, but the No. 32 Team Penske driver held the point as teammates Logano and Chubic followed in third and fourth. Berry was fifth.

Logano battled with Briscoe in the 203-bp Stage 2, but his No. 22 was strong enough, as it was at the short track in North Wilkesboro, to take the checkered flag and earn the maximum bonus for the segment win.

Five-time Richmond winner Humble trailed him, followed by Briscoe, Chubic and Blaney.

Briscoe asserted himself in his No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota in the final stage, pulling away by two seconds over Logano with regular 17.5 in the left, and the Camryx of Chichopier Bell and Ty Joe Burdick came to life.

Bell and Burdick stayed out ahead of Briscoe on older time but had to get with 58 laps remaining, turning the point over to Briscoe.
